What is
Prader-Willi
Syndrome?

Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a complex genetic condition that affects every aspect of a person’s life. It is most commonly known for the fact that people with PWS become obsessed with food anytime from about 2 years old. Unless they are strictly managed, they will over-eat (known as hyperphagia), become obese and have a variety of associated medical problems.

They never reach a state where they satisfy their cravings or hunger because their brain never sends the message that they are no longer hungry. Their mental and physical abilities are impaired and even though they become adults in age, they will never be able to live independently. It is important to note that PWS is caused as a result of a genetic abnormality and is not a disease that can be medically treated.

Prader-Willi syndrome is very rare and only affects an estimated 1 in 10,000 to 30,000 people worldwide
